Mental health awareness month

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an initial response provided to someone experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis. Like physical first aid, the goal is to offer support until professional help is received or the crisis resolves.

The core framework used globally is the ALGEE action plan:

1. A – Approach, assess for risk of suicide or harm: Observe the person and, if safe, initiate a conversation. Check for immediate safety risks.

2. L – Listen non-judgmentally: Provide a safe space for the person to speak without being interrupted, judged, or pressured to “fix” things immediately.

3. G – Give reassurance and information: Acknowledge that mental health challenges are real and treatable, and offer emotional support rather than just advice.

4. E – Encourage appropriate professional help: Suggest resources such as doctors, therapists, or crisis hotlines.

5. E – Encourage self-help and other support strategies: Help the person identify their existing support network, such as family, friends, or healthy coping mechanisms.

Important Resources:
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services (e.g., 999 in the UK). For urgent emotional support in the UK, you can call NHS 111, contact the Samaritans at 116 123, or text “SHOUT” to 85258.
